a) GIS - Geographic Information Systems
Organization
1. CUAS - Cologne University of Applied Sciences, International Office
2. DWA - German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste
Execution
in 2010, the GIS courses are organized in cooperation with the "DWA" for the first time. However, both courses are still executed through Cologne University of Applied Sciences. Courses are held in facilities of the university of applied sciences in Southern Cologne.

Short Description
The GIS Summer School 2010 of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences in association with the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA) consists of two independent one-week courses. Both courses are designed to attend them separately or in combination, depending on our needs and interests.
Within the first course “Introduction to Geo-Information Systems” you get a profound insight into the basics and fundamentals of GIS.
Within the second course “GIS in Water Resources Management” you will extend your knowledge about GIS in general and especially in the field of water resources management.
The contents of both courses will be communicated by lectures, practical training and excursions with main focus on practical applications and hands-on exercises.
You will work with up-to-date GIS software and hardware, get professional assistance and receive comprehensive course materials. Additionally you will have the possibility to watch and talk to GIS professionals during the excursions.
The maximal number of participants per course is limited to 15.
Course I (August 23 - 27) Introduction to Geo-Information Systems
This course offers the following topics:
- Principles of Geographic Information Systems
- GIS data structures & data sources
- Map projections, coordinate systems, scale
- Creating new geographic data - Geo-coding, digitizing & editing
- Analyzing geographic data - spatial analysis, geostatistics, 3D-analysis
- Cartographic presentation techniques - layout & design
The participants of the course "Introduction to Geo-Information Systems" will
- be provided with basic GIS concepts,
- understand the fundamentals of GIS tasks such as digitizing, thematic mapping, database management and spatial analysis,
- get substantial hands-on experience and familiarization with GIS software,
- develop an appreciation for how spatial data can be manipulated in a GIS to increase its utility,
get to know how to plan, organize and conduct own GIS projects,
- get substantial understanding of the practical potential of information systems as tools of modern management procedures.
Excursion: Wupperverband – Water Agency of the river Wupper (to be confirmed)
(August 30 - September 03) GIS for Water Resources Management
This course offeres the following topics:
- Watershed Delineation
- GIS for Watershed Management
- GIS for Urban Drainage
- GIS for Urban Water Supply
- Data models
- Special GIS tools: linear referencing, network analyst
- Model integration
The participants of the course “GIS in Water Resources Management” will
- understand GIS-Applications in the field of watershed management, urban drainage and urban water supply
- get substantial hands-on experience and familiarization with GIS instruments commonly applied for water management
- understand underlying data models and business processes in the water sector
Excursion: STEB – Urban Drainage Company of the City Cologne (to be confirmed)
Contact Hrs/ ECTS
Each of the courses consists of 25 contact hours plus optional homework as well as course material. Upon successful completion of a course, students receive a certificate indicating the achieved ECTS credits. Depending on the workload of the given homework, it is possible to receive 2 or 3 ECTS. In addition each participant will receive a DWA-certificate.

Admission Requirements
The GIS Summer School 2010 is designed in that way that you easily can accomplish both courses together without previous knowledge in GIS.
If you register only for the second week's course you should have already general knowledge of GIS as taught in the first week’s course.
The course “Introduction to Geo-Information Systems” addresses to GIS beginners with no or little knowledge about GIS. If you are searching for a comprehensive introduction into the theoretical basics and practical fundamentals of GIS take this course.
The course “GIS in Water Resources Management” addresses to GIS users with medium to good knowledge about GIS. If you are interested to deepen your knowledge in GIS and you are interested in the field of water resources management take this course.
Assessment
Each course will end with a project that students have to finish independently and that can be assessed by the professor after completion of the course.
