Institute of Automation Engineering (IA)
The foundation of the Faculty of Information, Media and Electrical Engineering (IME) was combined with an effective division into institutes. Hence, we were able to focus jobs, resources and, of course, know-how with the aim of providing services in research and development and, in particular, teaching specialised courses. We believe that sharing expertise in one field should be the guiding principle for founding a common institute. Automation engineering was the field our colleagues and staff members in electrical engineering were most interested in, so founding such an institute was the obvious thing to do. Automation aims to automate industrial plants in the field of production and process technology and power stations. One focus is on the plant itself with sensors and actors – and in particular the drives with their dedicated controls. And the other is on the information technology necessary for automation, one core of the expertise represented by the institute. The latter is not just a general field of (engineering) informatics but a specific IT application for the purposes of automation engineering. Colleagues for this institute were found mainly through joint lab and project work in research and development and industrial contacts and, secondarily, due to their field of specialisation. The institute’s fields of expertise include: Plant automation Electrical propulsion technologyPower electronics Model generation for technical processes and systems Systems technology Process management technologyMeasuring and control technologyComputer-assisted energy management Information technology for automationCAE Embedded control Project management and quality assurance for automation engineering Medical technology and medical diagnostics
Insitute for Media and Imaging Technology (IMP)
FocusThe focus of the Institute of Media and Phototechnology is on three different fields.Media technology deals thematically with questions of media production (video, film, sound, graphics, Internet) and the underlying technologies such as recording, storage, transmission, performance (display) and systems technologies.
Institute of Applied Optics and Electronics (AOE)
The Institute of Applied Optics and Electronics deals with optical technologies, on the one hand, and electrical engineering, on the other.
Institute of Automation Engineering (IA)

Institute of Electrical Engineering (IET)
The Institute of Electrical Engineering offers practice-focused, laboratory-supported teaching and research in the field of electrical engineering.
Institute of Telecommunications Technology (INT)
Telecommunications focuses on technologies by means of which one can transmit and process information. These technologies play a major role in modern everyday life – just think of MP3 players, mobile phones, satellite-based television or the Internet.
